I have a raised box garden in my backyard. I use a raised garden because the soil where I live is very hard, rocky and not very fertile. To break it up and amend it for a garden would be more work than it is worth. It’s also a semi-arid area in the midst of a drought.
As a result, I can’t count on much rain. Irrigation would be essential and the box garden made it easy to install a drip irrigation system. A raised box garden was a much easier and elegant solution for all my gardening problems.
I grow carrots, tomatoes, radishes, green onions and a few potatoes. When in season, I have all the fixings for some of my favorite things; salads and baked potatoes, all organic and pesticide free!
Once I have the time, I plan to build more beds and expand to grow lettuce, cucumbers, chard, peppers and maybe kale. Who knows, maybe even strawberries too. Gardening gives me a great sense of satisfaction from growing some of my own food. There’s nothing quite like working in the earth with my own two and so directly reaping the benefits of that work.
Gardening is also a great stress reducer. While working in my garden, I focus on the task at hand and the stresses of work and life in general are forgotten. For more ways that gardening and working around the home can improve your life check out the blog here on Garden Bridge Trust. Gardening is also a great way to burn some calories and spend time with family. You wouldn’t think it but one hour of gardening can burn up to 400 calories. So not only do I eat healthier but I also burn fat at the same time.
Finally, I also save some money on the grocery bill. Sure, it’s not a lot but every little bit helps. I also know that by gardening I contribute to saving the earth in my own small way. There are no fossil fuels burned producing these crops. There is no large farm equipment to plant and harvest it. No large plants to process and package them. No gas-guzzling trucks and associated pollution to transport them to market. No trip to the market in my own car. No, it’s not a lot but it’s my contribution to a cleaner world and with that comes another measure of peace of mind.
